Great Movie, Great Music, Poor Supplements.

The Blues Brothers is has finally been properly brought to home video. The King of all
car chase, R&B musicals has been, after far too long, given the royal treatment
befitting it's status. Long gone are the memories of the grainy mono tape.
This disk is a keeper.
The music is the story here. SO much better that the miserable Blues Brothers 2000, the worst
sequel since GhostBusters 2... See a pattern here?? The pure joy of the music is also
evident in every frame. The blues should NEVER be this fun. Aretha Franklin demanding respect,
Cab Calloway commanding the stage like a man twenty years younger, Ray Charles and John Lee
Hooker showing a generation how to sing with feeling.. This movie is a great musical. I think
that fact gets lost in the car chases.
.Speaking of the car chases, is there a more memorable chase in movie history than the chase in the
mall??? I love that seen, I love it for the balls it took to stage it, I love it for the genius to plan it and for the
sheer destruction of it all.. Unlike most other "money" shots in movies,
it really pays off..
The extra footage is very nice, but doesn't add too much, unlike The Abyss or
Aliens. It is mostly extra music and longer scenes. It adds little new. I wish they hadn't lost
the "real" Directors cut..
Sadly, I cannot watch this movie and not miss John Belushi and Cab Calloway. I even can't help but
remember the tragedy that befell John Landis, this movies director, on the The Twilight Zone segment he
made several years later. I was able to put that aside most of the time however, but still it was there
in the background.
I would like to thank Universal for Finally doing right by this film. I would however like to complain
about the supplements. The "making of" is little more than out takes from the crappy "making of"
Documentary in Blues Brothers 2000.. I wanted more for this price. I wanted more
and I wanted better. This is easily the worst supplements of ANY Collector's Edition from
Universal.
This movie is a BUY for every Blues Brothers fan, or just fan of car chases. A RENT for
casual fans for whom the movie alone is not enough to justify the purchase price, and
a PASS for those who hate the blues and wanton destruction.
