We have seen this movie before. It has the same plot as many
films of the
mid-eighties, which I guess you could call irony.
That said, this is better than
all of them. Rarely do retreads
surpass the original, but then again it is up
against a lot
of Jon Cryer films..
The all too similar plot has a lovable
loser falling for a girl
about to marry a jerk, but that is where the similarity
ends.
In most of these films the girl is a dolt who thinks that her
jerk of
a boyfriend is Mr. Wonderful, but not Drew Barrymore's
Julia, she is smart enough
to know he is lacking. The loser is
generally a schmuck who has few redeeming
values, but Sandlers
Robbie Hart is a great guy and a smart guy. He only lacks
money.
the other characters are also three dimensional. A real feat for a
romantic
comedy.
The boy meets girl, something gets in the way, boy gets girl genre
film
has had it shinning moments, Say Anything and Jerry Maguire come
to
mind, but these are definitely the exceptions, not the rule. The
Wedding Singer
is just as good.
The eighties as a period piece was quite disconcerting,
however,
I am 32 and was 19 when this film takes place. I feel so old. I wore
those
terrible clothes and listened to that music and thought that
Miami
Vice was the greatest television show ever. I am embarrassed
about this, and
after seeing this movie I am even more so. :>
The DVD is brilliant. The
menu's are quite showy and well done,
but busy at times. And I did not, and will
not, try the karaoke options.
The video is clear and sharp, and the sound is very
good. I was very impressed
and wish I had seen this at the movies. I rented this
movie, not knowing if
I would like it. I now intend on buying it.
I would
call this a BUY for all of us who lived it , or Adam
Sandler fans. A RENT for
those who are not sure and a PASS
for terminal curmudgeons with no heart or soul..
